GENERAL Gebze Institute of Technology (GIT) is a young university, established in 1992, with the objective of focusing on scientific and technological research and development and education at the graduate level. It is located in a purposefully selected area, at the epicenter of developing Turkish industry in the Marmara Region of Turkey. GIT’s main objective is research and development at the cutting edge of the technology. GIT aims at being a research institution which educates enterprising and open minded researchers, acquiring a prestigious position in the international society of science and technology, and leading national industry to acquire significant competitive advantages in the global market. As well as being young and dynamic, GIT is a assertive, developing university with its elite academic staff and state of the art infrastructure.

As a result of its precious location at the heart of Eurasia, GIT collaborates with academies and research centers of various countries from Central Asia to Western Europe. Exchange programs and

joint scientific activities are coordinated by the International Office and Turkish World Scientific and Technological Cooperation Centre (TURKBILTEK).

Since 1994, GIT provides graduate programs in various disciplines within its four major graduate schools, namely Science, Engineering, Architecture and Business Administration.  In 2001, GIT accepted its first undergraduate students into the departments of Materials Science and Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics. The education language at GIT is Turkish, and 30% of the courses are taught in English. All incoming Erasmus students will be offered a 4 to 8 weeks course of Turkish Language.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT GIT will provide higher education of excellent quality; depending on research and scholarship in order to advance in technology and to support regional and national economic success.

GIT’s mission is to educate and train students who:

  • Imbibes the essential principles of the Republic of Turkey and the universal ethics;

  • Can think critically and independently,

  • Knows how to compile, produce, develop and spread scientific knowledge,

  • Are talented researchers and team-workers having social responsibility and environmental awareness,

  • Knows the fundamentals of his/her profession, and becomes an expert in a related sub- discipline,

  • Can develop state of the art technology and utilize it.

In addition, GIT is committed to pursue research in collaboration with the industry in order to contribute to the development of the national industry.

 

POINTS OF PRIDE Although GIT is comparatively young it is already ranked among the top Turkish universities for educational value.

  • GIT was rated 6th  in 2003 and 2nd in 2004 among Turkish Universities according to the number of international publications per faculty.

  • GIT Faculty received various awards including: V.G. Sologub Award, TUBITAK Incitement Award, METU Mustafa Parlar Foundation Science Award, Sedat Simavi Science Award.

  • GIT joined the Formula G with its self-developed Solar Car in cooperation with the Sabancı University

 

HISTORY Since 1994, GIT provides graduate programs in various disciplines within its four major graduate schools, namely Science, Engineering, Architecture and Business Administration. In 2001, GIT accepted its first undergraduate students into the departments of Materials Science and Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics. GIT currently has 640 undergraduate and 1475 graduate students and 309 academic staff (130 having a PhD). Also, there are 37 research laboratories fully equipped with the latest technologies. The GIT library provides access to 2410 electronic periodicals, in addition to the 8,500 books, and 222 periodicals. The education language at GIT is Turkish, and 30% of the courses are taught in English. All incoming Erasmus students will be offered a 4 to 8 weeks course of Turkish Language.

 

ADMINISTRATION GIT is a state university receiving state funds for all of its scientific and educational activities, and all other expenditures as decreed by the Board of Higher Education Council of Turkey. The administration of the University is executed according to the Law on Higher Education. The formal head of the University is the Rector who implements the resolutions of the governing bodies of higher education, reviews and decides on the proposals of university boards and ensures coordination among departments. The University Senate is the chief academic body of GIT, composed of selected academicians from different departments, and responsible for coordinating the academic activities.

LOCATION GIT is located on the north-eastern shores of the Sea of Marmara, bordering Istanbul on the west and is only 60 kilometers away from the Bosphorus. The present industrial town Gebze, in the City of Kocaeli has a population of five hundred thousand, with numerous industries and hosts the largest research and development center in Turkey, TUBITAK-MAM, and the Gebze Institute of Technology.

The main campus of GIT (Çayırova Campus) is located on the Istanbul-Ankara highway, 10 kilometers away from Gebze city center towards Istanbul. The campus is settled in a wooded green savanna of 245,000 square meters. The second campus area, called the Muallimkoy Campus, is actively providing graduate studies and has research laboratories in its two main buildings comprising 48,000 square meters of enclosed area. In addition, the Department of Foreign Languages, which provides English Preparatory classes for both undergraduate and graduate students, functions in a separate out-of-the campus building in the city center of Gebze.

 

ACCOMMODATION AND STUDENT LIFE

Erasmus students will be offered accommodation in the student dormitories at low prices. There is also opportunity to stay at their classmates’ family houses, or they can rent apartments for reasonable prices nearby the campus.

If the students prefer to stay in the flats belonging to facilities of our Institute, they are charged around € 100, including cleaning services. If not, the students may look for private flats on locations close to the campus, the cost of which differs a lot depending on the conditions."

It is estimated that the average monthly personal expenses for students are between 300 and 400 Euro including rent and all other expenses.

Laboratories and Library: GIT has 37 Research and/or Teaching Laboratories equipped with state of the art hardware. The reading room at the library is available 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.  Library services are free of charge (membership is required to borrow books out of the library). GIT is connected to the world net through ULAKBIM, a university Data Processing Net. Every major department has its own computer network and laboratory for its students. In addition, public computer laboratories are available workdays and weekends.

Sports Facilities: The GIT Cayirova Campus houses a sports complex offering many sports opportunities including artificial turf football fields, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, table tennis, squash, indoor half-size basketball court and a conditioning gymnasium with a qualified trainer, and saunas. The Water Sports Club located at the GIT Marmara Seaside Social Complex is open to those interested in activities as swimming, canoeing and rowing. At the GIT Sports Club, all sporting facilities are available for use everyday, including weekends on appointment in advance. 

Health: Medical and dental services are available for students and the academic personnel at the GIT Health Services Center, located at the R-Block of Cayirova Campus, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Food:Cafeteria services are available at all three different campus locations.  The lunch menus consist of five-course calorie and nutrition controlled meals at reasonable prices. There are also cafes at all campus locations which provide a rich variety of snacks, fast food choices and beverages.

Transportation:The Cayirova and Muallimkoy Campus locations of GIT are accessible from Istanbul and Kocaeli city centers by the E-5 and the TEM Highways, via Haydarpasa-Gebze commuter trains, Harem and Eskihisar Ferries and the connecting commuter minibuses. Both campuses are located very close to the Kurtkoy Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul.

Security:All campus areas are under 24-hour security surveillance by security cameras as well as by security guards.
